How to Clean a Plugged-Up Drip Coffee Maker

By Victoria Ries

Are you getting frustrated by the length of time you have to wait for your coffee maker to brew your morning coffee? Calcium and lime deposits from your tap water are probably blocking your coffee maker's lines, making it hard for it to heat the water. Read on for the solution to this common problem.

Instructions

Things you'll need:

  • Half a gallon of white vinegar

  1.

    • 1

Fill your coffee carafe with white vinegar, and pour into your coffee maker's water reservoir.

    • 2

Switch on the coffee maker and let the vinegar clean the calcium and lime deposits as it travels through your lines.

    • 3

When the vinegar has filled your carafe, empty it, let the carafe cool down and then refill with fresh white vinegar.

    • 4

Repeat Steps 1 and 2. The vinegar should take less time to fill your carafe this time.

    • 5

Dump out the used white vinegar from your carafe; allow your carafe to cool, and then fill it with plain water. Test how long it takes to run through your coffee maker. If you are still not happy with the time your coffee maker takes to brew a pot; repeat Steps 1 and 2.

Tips & Warnings

·         After the vinegar treatments, wash your carafe in warm, soapy water to get rid of all residue.

·         Be extra careful handling hot liquids!

·         Always allow your carafe to cool before refilling it with fresh vinegar or freshly-drawn water.

·         Cracks and breaks will occur, if cool liquids are poured into a hot carafe.
